Grace, one of our house moms asked me to chop cabbage for her the other day. I was shocked to see her complete this task without a cutting board. The New Parents
When we find orphans, we do not put them up for adoption. We build them a home at Mattaw and find them loving, godly, Kenyan parents who commit to raising them in their culture. I had the chance to visit the Instep Baby House. They are caring for about 100 babies that were abandoned or orphaned. Wow that is one big batch of babies! I enjoyed seeing their facility and learning from them. While we appreciate all the loving and generous contributions from people all over, Mattaw does have a goal to eventually become self sufficient. We would like for the village to one day be able to earn all the money it needs to support the children. As part of this, we have cows. The children milk the cows each day, and some of the milk is sold to homes in the area. In Africa, people do not use a cutting board, and in fact, many do not even know what one is. Children are taught from an early age to cut vegetables right in their hand with nothing but a sharp knife. Lucy is one of the youngest children at Mattaw. She also has a number of medical issues, and so I end up spending lots of time with her. I have grown very close to this sweet little girl. This is a picture that was taken by little Peter, or me getting a hug from Bryan and Dominique. I helped rescue Dominique, and he has always wanted to be close to me since then. He is a sweet little boy, and he is very happy to live at Mattaw now. This picture shows that you really do not need that much to teach children. A roof to keep the rain out, some chairs and tables, and teachers who care. Oh, and children that want to learn. This is my little friend Peter, an African Orphan. I had the wonderful opportunity to help rescue Peter from the streets of Kitale. He survived by digging through trash. He always found enough for his little sister as well. Now they are both safe and sound at Mattaw, but Peter has no sponsors.<>Galleries
