Unpacking Nightmare

Well, I believe there were more in those bags than I thought! I have spent the whole day unpacking and cleaning dusty things from my old room at Mattaw’s house. Grocery Shopping

Today is Saturday, and that can mean only one thing . . . Grocery Shopping! Back home grocery shopping means making a quick run to a place like Walmart. In Africa, grocery shopping is an adventure. Where Do You Live?

Now that everyone is aware that the house hunt has begun, I have had many questions arise as to where I live. I do not live at Mattaw. I had the chance to visit the Instep Baby House. They are caring for about 100 babies that were abandoned or orphaned. Wow that is one big batch of babies! I enjoyed seeing their facility and learning from them. I hope to visit them again soon.

One of the wonderful things about working in Africa is getting to make new friends among the children. While at the Instep Baby House, I got to know some of the older children. I hope to get to visit with them again soon.

While we appreciate all the loving and generous contributions from people all over, Mattaw does have a goal to eventually become self sufficient. We would like for the village to one day be able to earn all the money it needs to support the children. As part of this, we have cows. The children milk the cows each day, and some of the milk is sold to homes in the area. This is a first step towards becoming self sufficient.

In Africa, people do not use a cutting board, and in fact, many do not even know what one is. Children are taught from an early age to cut vegetables right in their hand with nothing but a sharp knife. I would cut my finger off if I tried what this little girl is doing.

Lucy is one of the youngest children at Mattaw. She also has a number of medical issues, and so I end up spending lots of time with her. I have grown very close to this sweet little girl. Yes, she is dealing with serious medical issues, but I am encouraged to know that she is a happy little girl, and that she is loved and taken care of at Mattaw.

This is a picture that was taken by little Peter, or me getting a hug from Bryan and Dominique. I helped rescue Dominique, and he has always wanted to be close to me since then. He is a sweet little boy, and he is very happy to live at Mattaw now. When we brought him here, he had many health issues, but little by little, we are getting him all fixed up.

This picture shows that you really do not need that much to teach children. A roof to keep the rain out, some chairs and tables, and teachers who care. Oh, and children that want to learn. These kids are getting a great education, and I am always amazed to see how well behaved they all are during classes.

This is my little friend Peter, an African Orphan. I had the wonderful opportunity to help rescue Peter from the streets of Kitale. He survived by digging through trash. He always found enough for his little sister as well. Now they are both safe and sound at Mattaw, but Peter has no sponsors.
